Subject:Small update: Daft Punk, Hawai'i, Stanford
Time:01:24 am
So, it's been a while since I updated. A few big things of late:
  • Saw Daft Punk before I left. To be honest, I really can't think of a way to do the show justice. It was excellent, although much shorter than I expected. Still, it was absolutely worth $50. If you're curious about the experience, go read this review for the NYC show; it sounds identical to the LA show. Or, you could check out YouTube: the first portion and the encore. Awesome night.
  • Went to Hawai'i!!!! Woohoo!
    • Got two necklaces. (Necklaces are pretty much the only jewelery I'll wear, but I do like them!) Here's a photo of one. I'll take a photo of myself in the other at some point.
    • It was a trip of sea turtles (and one of my necklaces is a sea turtle, looks like made out of abalone shell). I'll try to post the story of the first sea turtle sighting. Summary: we snorkled a number of times, and most of them we saw sea turtles up close. The first time, it was a huge one! Cool animals.
    • I got a bit of a tan. Not as much as I'd like, but I'll take what I can get.
  • The evening of the Daft Punk concert, I also learned about the wonders of UnderArmour. I've since bought two shirts (one shortsleeve, one sleeveless) and may very well buy more. Used both while in Hawai'i, and tested the claim that you'll be cooler wearing them than shirtless. It's true. This stuff is incredible!
  • The lease on my apartment ends August 28th.
  • I'll move into Crothers Memorial Hall at Stanford on September 15th.

Just found some cool art by David Lanham. I like Zen, Lure, and Harold's Day Off the best. They can be downloaded as background images, too.

Edit: Thanks go to GP, for telling me they were all the same link. That has been fixed.

Had lunch with my dad yesterday; was really fun to see him. We went to Yardhouse, and shared a really good burger, and a very mediocre pastrami sandwhich (we each got one and then gave the other half).

Sandra: sounds like you had a nice lunch with dad
Greg: yea
Sandra: i'm sure looking forward to seeing you over christmas
Greg: cool
Greg: ya, it was nice to hang out w you guys last weekend
Sandra: ditto
Sandra: have i told you how much i enjoy the back lights and the lights on the window
Sandra: thanks a million
Sandra: i think of you every night when i see them
Greg: aww
Greg: I'm glad
Sandra: it's a nice hug

Subject:Weekend report
Time:03:29 pm
My whole family (including Scout) went down to Rancho Santa Fe as sort of a "quick" vacation, since my dad is starting law school again this week. Saturday we went to the beach there (it's called Powerhouse, for reference). My grandparents, and the Ryans, met us there. Among many things, Dan & I went surfing. I didn't do great, but I managed to catch one wave, which is better than I've done recently (especially since I haven't gone out in quite a while). And that one wave was a pretty good ride.

Chilled on the beach for a while, and then we went back, had some REALLY good pizza from Leucadia Pizzeria. Sooooo good!!!

Crashed there, then got up the next morning & did some computer work for them. And then went outside & spent the day by the pool. Reading, swimming, and enjoying the outdoors.

Then we drove home that evening. Apparently, I missed a humdinger of a shindig on Sunday night; my cell phone had died sometime Saturday and I didn't have my charger (car or AC) with me. Wish I'd been able to make it, sorry Brian/Oisze/Kim/Josh/everyone else.

Gonna be going and looking at some more apartments after work. If these don't look good, I think we may just go with Quail Meadow, just so we can get moved in sooner. I may not be able to bike every day, but a 5 mile drive is better than a traffic filled, 17+ mile drive.

Subject:Weekend & Big 5 Birthday Celebration
Time:09:52 am
Current Mood:[mood icon] happy
My mom's side of the family has five birthdays that happen between May 31 (my sister) and July 6 (mine), so we usually celebrate all five at the same time. This past weekend we celebrated for this year.

My cousin Dan came down late Friday night & crashed on our couch, then Saturday morning my sister, he, and I went surfing. Waves weren't great, and the break wasn't either (I didn't catch a single wave) but it was fun to get out.

We came back, showered (and in my case, shaved) and then drove down to Rancho Santa Fe (where my grandparents live). There we hung out around the pool, played some awesome games of water volleyball (a family favorite), and had an excellent dinner.

My sister's boyfriend, TJ, also came along. Was fun having him around, and he really interacted well with my grandparents (and the rest of the family). I was very impressed with him, actually; he was asking some really good questions to get to know them. Go TJ (and Lauren)!

After dinner we went outside & tried out the light up frisbee; my uncle shot some pretty good photos, I'll post them soon. A very fun day.

The next day (Sunday) we were trying to figure out something suitable birthday like to do (since we hadn't celebrated much on my real birthday, or the weekend after it). I had borrowed [info]arichi's copy of Shaolin Soccer, and had [ironically] gotten Love Actually from NetFlix. Both were so that I could show them to my family. So we decided to stay in and just watch movies & relax.

It was a very fun, relaxing day. We watched Shaolin Soccer first, and they enjoyed that. Then we had lunch and did some stuff around the house, then started watching Love Actually. My family loved it! They also said that they thought it'd be a fun Christmas tradition to watch that movie "assuming someone gets it on DVD" (I hadn't gotten that gift yet, though I did end up getting it, see below). Heh.

All in all, a very fun way to spend the day.
