| I've finally put my portfolio up, since I'm looking for a team to join after I graduate.
I've also been adding more photos, and put up a new theme, too! Fun fun fun ('till my daddy takes my t-bird away)... | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

| Rands In Repose says your resume has got 30 seconds. So use A Glimpse and a Hook:
The terrifying reality regarding your resume is that for all the many hours you put into fine-tuning, you've got 30 seconds to make an impression on me. Maybe less.
[...]
The hook is more important. The hook will leave me with a question. Maybe it's something from your other interests section? How about an objective so outlandish that I can't help but set up a phone screen. I'm not suggesting that you make anything up, I'm asking you to market yourself in a way that I'm going to remember. A resume is not a statement of facts. It's a declaration of intent.

| WA was awesome enough to rehire me, even knowing that I'll only be here for about 7 months, depending on which grad schools accept me.
Since most of my projects were already divvied up, I'll actually be changing a lot of the stuff I'm doing. I'll post more about that later, when we get it more figured out. I'll still be working on the cancer website that I find really interesting, though. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
| No longer being hired by the company; I'll be flying back tomorrow as planned.
I'm actually doing ok; very thoughtful about my next step, though. | comments: Leave a comment |
| So, Thursday is my last day. Friday, I fly to Austin to meet the rest of the team (sales, management & QA, essentially). Small startup, but not too small, surprisingly.
I'm excited, but I'm gonna really, really miss Web Advanced!
I'll be back Sunday morning (thanks for picking me up, Rob), so I'm around Sunday night. Movie night, people!

| In case you're wondering about my mysterious previous post, here's the big change: I'm leaving Web Advanced.
- I'm going to go work for a startup that my father is part of, as a full time developer. They're called Emergency Management Technologies; I'll post more about them, and the product, later.
- My last day at Web Advanced is January 25th.
- I told them (my boss, the CTO, and the CEO) today. They weren't happy, but they understand.
- I'm giving them 20 days notice, instead of 2 weeks, since I'm the head dev on our huge project. I'll try to finish some of the stuff that it'd be hard for anyone else to do, and document a lot of my work on it.
- I'm gonna miss working there, it's a good company. Anyone want a job writing Asp.Net code, or for that matter, as a web designer? They're an excellent company, though they'd prefer people who have Asp.Net experience, I think.
- I'll be writing a web application, which my father has already put a lot of work into, in PHP5 (and MySQL). I'll also be doing HCI stuff, AJAX, and interface design.
- I'll be telecommuting.
- I'm somewhat worried about becoming too isolated, but I'm also excited to have the space/privacy to work.
- This provides an excellent excuse to finally buy a new laptop (so that I can go to coffee shops, parks, etc).
- I'm debating between a conventional PC laptop (likely Dell), a MacBook, or a tablet PC of some sort. If I got a tablet, I'd likely also buy a flexible keyboard to make writing code possible. Thoughts?
- After 12 months of employment, I'll get 1% of the company.
- This means I'll have to work some during grad school, but I'll make that work.
I'm excited, a bit nervous, and I can't wait to see what happens. | comments: 15 comments or Leave a comment |
| Normally our office is pleasantly cool. But, I have a floor fan; the vent doesn't hit my desk, and I like stiffled if the air isn't moving.
When I came back from lunch today my [shared] office was a lot warmer than the rest of the suite. I mentioned it to my coworkers in my office. Tatyana agreed, though she was ok with it. waywardchild28, on the other hand, was wearing a sweater. I turned on my fan, set it to low, and got to work.
Eventually, it got to the point that it was getting uncomfortable, so we complained to the building management. They come into our office. "Hm, it definitely is too warm. We'll go adjust the system." They leave. Around 5 minutes later, I notice it getting much warmer... I mention this to waywardchild28, as she's taking off her sweater, because she's too warm. Tatyana is bright red, she's so warm.
We're informed that the AC has broken. The whole office starts to heat up.
An hour or so later, our CEO walks by the office door and looks in to see how we're doing. He notices my fan, going at full blast, pointed straight at me.
"That is SO not fair!" *pout*

| Had my review with Adam yesterday! Went well. From the paper they gave me:Our clients have been happy with the code that you have produced, and have in many circumstances asked to have you work on their work again [...] This, as a overall measure, is a very positive sign.
More specifically, both myself and our clients have been impressed at the level of coding and projects that you have turned out. The LPS system has a clean design and has been well recieved by both the higher level and technical staff at [the customer company]. The Mapquest [project] was clearly head and shoulders above what they or Mapquest was expecting, and was delivered when you had little experience here or with the technologies required. The Mapquest project was the one that I had to work on over a weekend.
So yeah, they're very happy. And, I got a ~10% raise (that much, they said, because Cost of Living has gone up, business is good, and payscale in the area and profession has gone up a lot). | comments: 11 comments or Leave a comment |

| Had a review this week, and I got another raise! This puts me slightly above the level I'd hoped to be at when I joined a company (50k), but to be honest, I'm pretty happy.
In the review, they also asked about where I wanted to go at our company, and what I wanted to do. They mentioned that they liked how I had been helping one of my coworkers, in addition to my regular coding duties, and asked if I was interested in continuing/expanding that. I said I was, which they were happy about.
Oh yeah, and they also made my promotion to Lead Developer official. W00t!
I can now update some of my goals from my previous goal post:
Immediate Goals (next few weeks) -invest in mutual funds and/or stocks (starting on this, hopefully have it going by end of the month)
-rent an apartment/condo -lose my gut, maybe get a two-pack (working on it) -get my weight under 185 lbs (also working on it, am down from 198 to 192)
-start bike riding to work -find ways to exercise that I enjoy and will do regularly (uh. eesh.) -organize recreational events with coworkers & friends (uh... working on it)
Short Term Goals (pref by year's end)
-make $50k/year w00t! -make Funnel, my rss screensaver, work cleanly, get some users? -finish Fiber, my online address book (working on it) -learn to play the harmonica (hm, that fell by the wayside, must pick that back up)
-figure out a breakdown of $ that works for me (probably based upon the 60% rule) (kinda have this going, I have a very rough idea, should probably polish it a bit) -invest annual max into a IRA and/or 401(k)
-get LASIK surgery (anyone know much about this?) (can't do it yet, and it's dangerous) -Get better at cooking (hm, need to work on that.) | comments: 7 comments or Leave a comment |

And right now:

| Left work a little after 5 yesterday (I usually leave between 6 & 6:30). Went home, said hello to my family in a croak and then my mom gave me a big bowl of Homemade Chicken Soup. Mmmmmmmm. So good.
She had defrosted a big thing of it. I ate the entire thing. About 6 bowls worth of soup. We finished watching Amelie (a very funny, amusing movie) and then I went upstairs and took a long bath. Went to bed.
Slept in this morning (as my boss had suggested I do, if it'd help) and then got up. Aches were pretty much gone (I may not be Wolverine, but at least I can usually self repair fairly fast), but my throat hurt.
Went downstairs, cooked a big ol' mess o' scrambeled eggs (and cheese!) and ate them all. Grabbed the food my mom had kindly gathered for me, and drove into work. It's actually kinda fun not talking, definitely makes you think about other ways of expressing yourself. And it reminds me that I really want to learn sign language. saizai any suggestions on how to do that? | comments: 6 comments or Leave a comment |
